Hiking at Salem Lake

Today (Friday) was the day of our monthly hiking event.  About a dozen of us traveled to Winston-Salem and went on a 5-mile hike around beautiful 365-acre Salem Lake.  Here are some pictures of Salem Lake.  These are from the Trail Link website

We went about a 1/4 of the way around the lake loop (total of seven miles), and then hiked back.  We all packed a light lunch and after relaxing and eating, we headed back to Salisbury.

This is one of several hiking excursions that we've made since we started the Outdoor Adventure Club at Rufty-Holmes in the spring.  We've hiked at local parks (Salisbury Community Park & Dan Nicholas Park) and also taken trips to Boone's Cave in Davidson County, NC.

I'll be posting some other pictures from today's and other hikes soon right here!  So keep posted.

Our next outing in August will be to scenic Eagle Point Nature Preserve here in Rowan County. We are also talking about other possible trips in future months that may include more hiking, biking, or canoeing.

If you are local and over 50 years old, you may contact RHSC (Rufty-Holmes) about the Outdoor Adventure Club by calling 704-216-7714.    It's free to join!

Panthers Game

I had one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life this past Sunday [Dec. 22, 2013]  in Charlotte as I was able to attend the Panthers-Saints game.   What a blast!  It was such an exciting game.  Low-scoring, but hard-fought.   My friend wanted to leave, with five minutes to go in the game, after the Saints scored a touchdown and went ahead.  He wanted to leave again, with two minutes to go, as the Panthers decided to kick the ball away to the Saints.  Many others -WERE- leaving.  I told him, "Let's stay. I know something is going to happen.  Just believe."  I must admit, it didn't look good.  But we stayed, and what appeared to be a miracle happened. We got the ball back and scored with 23 seconds left.

This picture pretty much tells the story.   This was at the end of the game, as the Panthers had just scored the go-ahead touchdown with 23 seconds left, and then the PA announcer shared the news that the Panthers were indeed going to the NFL playoffs, the first time in five years.   Everyone was pretty excited, as you can probably tell from the pic.  I hope to add a video soon.  Keep posted.   The videos are unbelievable.. the crowd noise was the loudest I've ever heard in my life!

Thanks to Ken for allowing my best friend Fred and I to go to this game together.  We wouldn't have been able to make it without you.   I truly appreciate your generosity and kindness in giving him the tickets.  This was truly a memorable and unforgettable experience for us.  I look forward to being able to "thank you" in person sometime soon.

  Go Panthers!

Been There! Done That!

This will be the site for my Travel Page:  "Been There!  Done That!"  I'm not quite a world traveler.. yet.  I haven't even been OUTSIDE the continental United States.  But I have visited 16 states (that's all!) so far.. with plans to visit many more.  For me, at this current juncture, my motto is- "Quality, not Quantity!"  I've seen a lot of cool things in my travels.  Been to our nation's capital as a young boy, lived five years in sunny Florida, seen Lake Tahoe, and Hollywood, California!  More on all of that later.

If you're into travel.. this is the spot for you to explore. Please select the "Posts (Atom)" button at the bottom of this page.  It will save new posts to your computer for you to receive when they are posted to this site.  [Each and every Page on this site has that option]. I also invite anyone that's willing to share their travel experiences here too.  And I hope to do that.  I probably can't share everyone's experiences.. some of you will have to get your own travel site.  But if you've got an unusual or interesting travel experience to relate, let me know.

  Ok.. let's go exploring.. together!
